Security Posture Management

Posture is not a product you buy. It is the measurable state of your defenses right now, and most of it can be read from outside your business without touching anything.

What Security Posture Means

Your security posture is the state of your defenses, measured rather than assumed. It answers a question most owners cannot answer honestly: if someone tried today, how hard would it be?

Most of the answer can be read from outside your business, from public records, without touching anything you own.

The term arrived from enterprise software, where posture management means a platform watching thousands of cloud resources. That is not what a dental practice or a law firm needs, and the pricing reflects an audience that is not you. The underlying idea still applies, and the part that matters most to a small business can be measured from outside for free.

Posture Is a Moving Target

A certificate expires, a service is opened for a vendor, a record is edited. Posture is the state today, not the state at the audit.

The Four Things Posture Actually Measures

  • Identity

Can someone claim to be you? Email authentication is the whole game here, and it is the single most common gap we find.

  • Surface

How many ways in are there, and do you know about all of them?

  • Credentials

    Are the keys already copied?

  • Trust

Do the signals that vouch for you still hold?

Why a Grade Instead of a Report

A list of findings tells you what is wrong. It does not tell you how bad, whether it improved, or what to do first.

Improving Posture Without Buying Anything

  1. Close the Identity Gap First

Publishing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records is a DNS change that takes about ten minutes and costs nothing. It is the highest return action available to almost every small business, and most have never done it.

  2. Find Out What You Own

Certificate transparency logs list every subdomain a certificate was issued for. Read yours and you will usually find at least one service you forgot existed. Shut down what is not needed.

  3. Rotate What Is Already Public

If staff addresses appear in breach data, assume any reused password is compromised. Forcing a reset and turning on two-step login costs nothing but an afternoon.

  4. Then Measure Again

Posture is only meaningful as a trend. Fix, remeasure, and confirm the grade moved. A change you cannot verify is a change you did not really make.

Questions

  • Cloud security posture management watches configuration inside cloud accounts like AWS or Azure, and it requires access to those accounts. What is described here is external posture, measured without any access at all. A business running on Microsoft 365 and a website has very little for CSPM to look at and quite a lot of external exposure.

  • Certificates expire on a schedule, breach corpora publish without warning, and DNS changes whenever someone touches it. Monthly is a reasonable floor. Continuous is better, which is the argument for monitoring rather than a one-time assessment.

  • Email authentication is one of the most common weaknesses businesses expose publicly, and it is usually the fastest to close. Publishing SPF, DKIM and DMARC is a DNS change that takes about an afternoon. Holding a strong grade afterwards takes ongoing attention rather than a single fix.

  • Blindspot is not a penetration test. Nothing is logged into, no password is tested, and no network is touched. Every check reads a record that is already public, in the same way anyone else could look it up. That limit is deliberate. It is what makes it possible to run this scan for any business, for free, without asking anyone's permission first.
